PEOPLE in Hampshire are being asked to put forward good neighbours who have made a difference either to them personally or to the community at large. Hampshire County Council has launched its Good Neighbour Award Scheme for 07/08, giving people the opportunity to say thank you and reward the support of volunteers and friends, whether someone who collects shopping for an elderly neighbour or helps tidy gardens. Leader of Hampshire County Council Councillor Ken Thornber said: "We have been hosting these awards for three years now and it's an occasion that I really look forward to. Hampshire County Council recognises that good neighbours are essential in our local communities and this awards scheme is an opportunity to reward and encourage those that volunteer their own time to support others." .

EchoStar Communications has won a court ruling in the TiVo Inc. v. EchoStar Communications Corp. lawsuit that allows the company to continue selling digital video recorders while it appeals rival TiVo Inc.'s victory in a patent case. "We are pleased the Federal Court found that EchoStar has a 'substantial case on the merits' and blocked the Texas decision for the duration of the appeal. This action by the Federal Court reinforces our belief that the Texas court made significant errors during the trial process and we look forward to complete vindication of our position," read a statement from the company. "As a result of the Court action, our customers will not be disrupted and all of our DVR models will continue to be available through the EchoStar distribution system." TiVo won a trial in Texas, where it accused EchoStar of infringing a patent on so-called time-warp technology that lets users record one programme while watching another.

The final symposium I attended on Sunday before heading to the airport was a real brain bender. Titled "Nuclear physics: New answers, new questions about the visible universe." The talks spanned both theoretical and experimental aspects of the field—this article will focus on the theoretical lectures, a second article will cover the experimental discussions. The first speaker, Dr. Don Geesaman, eloquently stated the goals of the field: "the mission in nuclear physics is to understand the origin, evolution, and structure of baryonic matter in the universe—the matter that makes up stars, planets, and human life itself." All of the talks, both experimental and theoretical focused on hadrons, their substituent quarks, and the forces that hold them together. Hadrons are strongly interacting subatomic particles that are composed of quarks.

Three Chinese companies are in hot legal water for providing access to infringed copyrighted material Looks like Google/YouTube isn't the only online giant in trouble for yielding copyrighted material in its searches. China's top search engine, Baidu.com Inc, has been brought to court by three major record companies, Universal Music Ltd, Sony BMG Music Entertainment (Hong Kong) Ltd and Warner Music Hong Kong Ltd, for allegedly giving access to copyrighted music files. The companies have asked for a court order to force Baidu.com to remove links to sites with infringing material, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, IFPI, the organization handling the company's complaints said in a released statement. The IFPI is the parent organization of the RIAA, well know in the U.S.

Truckee ready to rumble
Mark Hodges, head coach of the Vaqueros, reciprocated Shaffers respect for his opponent.
Especially when youre playing a program of Truckees tradition and history, its always a big game, Hodges said. Were pleased to be playing Truckee. We wouldnt want to be playing anybody else. If you want to be the best, youve got to play the best. And you usually have to go through Truckee.
Knowing this, Hodges made the one-hour drive to Surprise Stadium last weekend to scout the Truckee-Sparks contest. He said people have been asking for his assessment ever since the Wolverines secured the No. 1 seed with a 35-27 win.
I think the best team won, the coach said. Theres no doubt about it. Truckee was the best team in every aspect. And I think Sparks is a good team, too.

City offers meter parking by cell phone
WINNIPEG, Manitoba, March 6 (UPI) -- The city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, has launched a new service where drivers can top up their parking meter time from anywhere using a cell phone.
A four-month pilot project worked successfully, and the city rolled out the high-tech plan citywide on Wednesday, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., reported.
Users must create an account with the city with their personal and credit information, along with the vehicle description. Once parked, users dial a number and enter a location code and leave.
Credit crunch catches up with Goldman
The average estimate for 2008 earnings, down modestly during the second half last year, plunged 13 percent since February 1 as analysts focused on Goldman's exposure to hard-hit markets. Goldman is expected to report first-quarter earnings of $3.24 a share on March 18, according to Reuters Estimates. That's about half what it earned last year, buoyed by an LBO boom, frothy financial markets and investment gains. Forecasts have come down sharply for all the big banks, as the credit crunch spreads across almost every market -- the contagion effect that Wall Street executives last year assured analysts was not happening. The most important yardstick, though, is the stock market. Goldman, for years a leader among financial stocks, is down more than 26 percent this year.

Whitney Senior Center program in jeopardy

The Whitney Center encourages Somali elders to participate in the classes so they pass information to younger community members. The Somali Elders Council, which officially became an organization this month, credits its origins to the Opening Doors Building Bridges program. "We started there," said Ismail Ali, chairman of the group. "We gathered there to discuss." The group hopes to take the Whitney Center's outreach philosophy to a new level, by offering everything from establishing a women's group to making cemetery arrangements for Muslim families, Ali said.
